Horsehead Nebula is one of the most photographed objects in the sky. It gained additional popularity after NASA published gorgeous closeups from Hubble Space Telescope. It's also known as Barnard 33 or IC434. It's located to the South of Alnitak, a bright star in Orion's Belt, approximately 1375 light years from Earth. The dark cloud of dust and gas is a region in the Orion molecular cloud complex, where star formation is taking place.
This image was taken from Los Angeles Astronomical Society's dark sky location in Lockwood Valley, California, using RedCat 51 telescope (250mm f/4.9) and Optolong light pollution filter for total of almost 8 hours exposure time using dedicated cooled astronomy camera in winter of 2020. Winter is when Orion constellation is the highest in the sky. The reds in the image indicate presence of Hydrogen alpha emissions. The darkness of the nebula is blocking the light of a bright star behind it.
Also in the image is Flame Nebula (designated as NGC 2024 and Sh2-277) in constellation Orion, where Alnitak, a bright star on Orion's Belt, is ionizing the interstellar Hydrogen molecular gas cloud, producing beautiful emissions in the red part of the spectrum.
