IC 2944 Nebula Closeup offers a detailed, starless view of a region within the Running Chicken Nebula. Glowing orange edges trace the gas clouds, while rose, violet, and blue-gray tones shape the surrounding folds. Dark pockets and silhouetted globules interrupt the brighter structures, giving the image a strong contrast between light and shadow.
This astrophotograph was made by combining ultra-narrowband images captured through Hydrogen-alpha, Oxygen III, and Sulfur II filters—a processing approach known as HSO. These filters isolate light from specific wavelengths, helping reveal nebular detail while reducing the effects of light pollution. The object was tracked and photographed for several hours with a high-end amateur telescope. The resulting colors are a processed, artificial-color representation of the separate wavelength data, rather than a view of how the nebula would appear to the unaided eye.
IC 2944 lies in the constellation Centaurus and is associated with the young star cluster Collinder 249. The larger region is nicknamed the Running Chicken Nebula, and it is also known for Thackeray’s Globules—dense clouds of gas and dust seen in silhouette against glowing nebular material. This close crop focuses attention on that interplay of bright emission and dark structure. Its atmospheric palette and fine detail make it a distinctive focal point for a home, studio, or workspace.
